Travel & Need to Knows
Logistics for your trip & excursion travel times
Weather
Each season offers unique experiences in northern New Mexico which makes every month a great month to visit Abiquiú. Check our weather page for more information to help you correctly pack, so you can enjoy.
Arriving by Air
The two closest airports in the area are the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ; 124 miles, allow 2.5 hours) and the Santa Fe Municipal Airport (SAF; 67 miles). Most people arriving by air fly into ABQ (flights are generally cheaper) and rent a car to drive to Abiquiú.
Cars and Driving
A few weeks before your check-in date we will send you detailed directions and maps. You will need a car or driver to reach Abiquiú. We are located in a gated community ten miles outside the village of Abiquiú. Ghost Ranch, Plaza Blanca, Echo Ampitheater, Carson National Forest, and Christ Monastery in the Dessert are in the surrounding area. The Casita is 70 minutes from Santa Fe and 90 minutes from Taos.
Especially in winter months when it has snowed, we recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle. Once you turn off County Road 96, the private roads back to the Casita are gravel to preserve the natural beauty of the area. We also recommend that you plan to arrive during daylight hours your first time – it's just easier to find the properties that way.
Download the NMRoads app to your smartphone to get maps, road conditions, weather conditions and rest areas.
Groceries
We always stop in Santa Fe or Espanola to purchase our food, beverages and supplies. After you pass through Espanola, there is a local general store in Abiquiú (Bode's) but no large grocery chains.
Train
The Rail Runner Express commuter train connects Santa Fe and Albuquerque with high-speed transportation. Visitors arriving at the Albuquerque airport can take a shuttle to the downtown Albuquerque station. It's an 80-minute ride from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Call for station locations. 866-795-7245
Bus
The Sandia Shuttle provides bus shuttle services between Santa Fe and Albuquerque International Airport with 30 daily trips that take 70 minutes. This is a good option if members of your party are arriving or departing on different days. Reservations required. 888-775-5696
Excursion Travel Times
The Grand Hacienda is located in Abiquiú Lake, a gated community, in northern New Mexico. The Abiquiú Lake Vacations' rental homes and guest rooms are centrally located near the major attractions, and yet they are private and remote. All properties are located in the perfect location to explore Abiquiú area attractions and sights or relax and rejuvenate in privacy.
